Steak Jerky

My mom brought this home:

That's right!  Steak.  And it was for us!  She made it into jerky treats.  Nom nom nom.  We love crunchy meat snacks.

The technique is pretty much the same for all meat jerky treats that she makes us.  Sometimes Mom pre-cooks them by boiling but not always.  Then she just trims the fat and slices them really thin with the grain for chewy treats or against the grain for easily breakable treats, to about 1/8" thickness.  The meat is then placed in a single layer on a wire rack and baked at 175 to 200 F for a few hours or until dried all the way through.  Mom also flips them over once or twice while cooking.

Mom stores them in the fridge for safe keeping.  This steak was pretty marbled, which made it greasy, so before Mom put them in the airtight container, she patted them with a paper towel.

Mom makes jerky out of beef, chicken, and bison for us.  This steak jerky was kind of spendy (about $10 for what turned out to be about 2 oz. of jerky), so Mom says she'll probably use cheaper cuts in the future.

This jerky didn't last long, but it was sure tasty!

I gotta say, after seeing all of Golden Sugar's amazing treats on these blog hops, I'm going to have to get my mom to be more creative in the dog kitchen!

  1. I'm drooling all over the floor. Those jerky treats sound so good. I think I'm going to have to push my person into the kitchen.

    1. They're super easy, so you shouldn't have to push your person too hard! (Plus, they might slip in your puddle o'drool!)

      Thanks for stopping by!

  5. My friend told me about doing this the other day. She said she goes to the supermarket and buys the discounted or on-sale meat. She says doing this is WAY cheaper than buying bags of premade treats and you know they are healthy and grain-free.
